Captain Rick Ilg, a dedicated firefighter and paramedic, passed away on September 12, 2021, after a courageous battle with brain cancer, which is considered a line of duty death due to his exposure to carcinogens in firefighting.
Always Rember'd Tyler Jaggers USGC Air Station Two Astoria OR
The Coast Guard mourns the passing, and honors the courage, of Aviation Survival Technician (AST) Tyler Jaggers. On February 27, he was critically injured during a medical evacuation mission offshore from Cape Flattery, Washington, and later succumbed to his injuries and passed away at Madigan Army Medical Center.
Prior to his passing, he was meritoriously advanced to AST2 for his relentless drive in qualifications, the mentorship he consistently provided to swimmer candidates, and his exceptional performance across operational missions. Additionally, the Commandant of the Coast Guard awarded him the Distinguished Flying Cross – one of our Nation’s highest awards for heroism in aerial flight.
Through his selfless service and sacrifice, AST2 Jaggers exemplified the finest legacies of Coast Guard service, and the sacred oath of the Aviation Rescue Swimmer community: "So Others May Live".

Honoring the Life and Service of Officer Scott Hanley
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Officer Scott Hanley, who died Sunday following a medical event. Scott was an active-duty member of the Hillsboro Police Department at the time. He served as a police officer in Oregon for 26 years.
Officer Hanley served our community with dedication and courage during his time in the Patrol Division and Traffic Unit. He was a fearless advocate for public safety and never hesitated to put others first, and he was a well-regarded motor officer throughout the Pacific Northwest. His service, integrity, and commitment to this community will not be forgotten.
Always Rember'd Heavy Equipment Operator Jason Ensign OR
Heavy Equipment Operator Ensign was killed after rapidly changing conditions overtook his bulldozer during firefighting operations on the Wrights Spring Fire.
Jason Ensign of Klamath Falls, was operating a Caterpillar D-6 dozer for Green Diamond Timber Resource Company when the incident occurred.
Ensign was working alongside crews near the Yahwee Plateau, where firefighters and equipment operators were constructing dozer lines and improving access ahead of the fire.
Officials said a weather event caused the fire to grow unexpectedly, producing extreme fire behavior that cut off Ensign’s route to a designated safety zone. Crews learned at approximately 4:30 p.m. that a dozer was missing and began searching the area.
After conditions subsided, crews responded to Ensign’s last known location, which investigators identified using cellphone information and witness statements.
Personnel from the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon Department of Forestry located the extensively damaged dozer later that night. Ensign was found deceased inside its enclosed cab.
